A global pandemic? Things like that are for history books or the Apocalypse, not the 21st century. Yet here we are watching restaurants, schools, and businesses close their doors in an attempt to stop the spread of Coronavirus. Even Hollywood has shut down!
Since both my mother and I have serious underlying health conditions, my family is in total lockdown mode. It’s paramount we don’t catch this new virus. Our chances of surviving would be slim😬.
While we’re taking this epidemic very seriously (as everyone should), I could use a break from the news and its croakings of doom. Fortunately, I’m the queen of having fun while quarantined! I’ve been doing it every winter since 2008 to avoid the regular flu.
So, today Tink and I are sharing our favorite tips for staying entertained while self-isolating!
Number 1: Craft and Create!
Crafting is the ultimate way to make time fly. I lose hours working on my dolly projects. In fact, just talking about crafts excites me! How about we make something right now? Something simple like–doll-sized DVDs!
Quick Craft–Easy DVDs For Barbie Dolls:
Gluing pictures to both sides of the foam does two things:
- It gives you even more movie options.
- The foam still looks like a DVD even if it’s laying wrong side up.
Number 2: Sew Something.
If you ask me, everyone should learn to sew! It’s a rewarding hobby that promotes creativity, focus, and coordination. I also find the rhythm of hand sewing calming.
Normally, Tink is the lucky recipient of my handiwork, but I think it’s time to show the rest of the miniverse some love, don’t you?
Number 3: Play a board game.
As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing better than a good board game. Sister usually wins at Life, but I’m the master of Monopoly (unless dad joins in🙄).
Number 4: Read a book.
Good authors are good readers. Why? Because reading hones writing skills, such as character creation, scene-setting, and structuring dialogue.
Think about it: While you’re wondering what will befall your hero or heroine, you’re also building valuable story-telling abilities!
So, when boredom creeps in, grab a book😉.
Number 5: Play a digital game.
There’s no harm in using this time at home to kick back and level up in your online games. App Stores are filled with puzzles, role-play, and good ol’ matching games. Some don’t even need an internet connection to work.
I enjoy world-building games, like Castle Story, Elvenar, and Township.
Number 6: Movie Marathon!
This is a no-brainer. Everyone loves a good show. Since movie theaters are shut down, many studios are releasing their theatrical films directly to streaming services, like Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Vudu.
The only hard part is finding a flick everyone can agree on.
Number 7: Browse Etsy.
Etsy is a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind dollhouse minis. You can find hyper-realistic miniature food, flowers, books, games…pretty much anything!
Of course, my purse strings have tightened due to furloughs😒.
Still, that won’t stop me from browsing the shops, looking for inspiration for my next project.
Number 8: Learn a new craft.
What happens when the fun of sewing wears off? Or maybe you’re tired of peeling glue off your fingers from all those tiny papercrafts.
How about learning a new crafting technique?
When I was recovering from neurosurgery, I needed something that wasn’t overly physical to keep me occupied while healing. That’s when I learned to make doll furniture out of plastic canvas.
Plastic canvas is great for kids and adults who enjoy stitching. The patterns are easy to follow, and you don’t need a lot of supplies to get started.
Plus, the variety of stuff you can make is limitless. There are patterns for everything from a simple Barbie chair to a giant doll room. Right now, I’m working on this fashion doll boutique:
Since most craft stores don’t carry doll-related patterns, I buy mine online at Annie’s Craft Store.
