Ah, it’s good to be back in the blogosphere! Having a month off was nice (finally got a few things accomplished?), but I’m ready to get back to sharing doll crafts and reviews with you!
So let’s kick things off with an egg-stra special review of
Hatchimal CollEGGtibles!
Sister loves these tiny Hatchimals. She says they are some of the best blind packs around and been insisting I test them. Well, her persistence finally paid off. I took a chance and bought a whole carton of CollEGGtibles!
Now let’s see if they are as fun as Sister claims.
What is a CollEGGtible?
Hatchimal CollEGGtibles are miniature versions of the wildly popular Hatchimals created by Spin Master.
Full-sized Hatchimals cost about $60, but these itty-bitty versions are much easier on the pocketbook. Single blind bags are $2.88, two-packs are around $5.00, and this twelve-pack was $19.99.
There are 80 different Hatchimals to collect in this season, and inside each carton are two exclusive swanlings. That’s exciting!
According to the package, these CollEGGtibles glow when you set them over a light. I believe Season 4 is the first to have this feature.
I’m curious to see how brightly these Hatchimals shine, so we’ll have to check this out.
One side of the collector’s guide shows the different hangouts in Hatchtopia (the place where Hatchimals live), and the other side has a checklist for keeping track of the Hatchies you find.
The instructions say to rub the purple heart on the egg until it turns pink. Once the heart is pink, the egg is ready to hatch!
Yes, the swanlings are already open. So technically we only get to hatch 10 Hatchimals.
One swanling is clear with purple patches, and the other is purple with pink patches. They both have translucent bodies and silver, glitter-covered wings.
These guys are pretty cute! I’m not crazy about the heart-shaped holes in their bellies, but their perky faces are adorable.
However, I’m not sure which exclusive swanlings they are! They don’t match any of the ones shown in the picture.
Unfortunately, this happens with blind boxes. Sometimes the pictures on the box to look different from the surprise inside.
Still, this is a quite a difference. I’m not even sure I can cross them off the checklist!
Oh well, they pass the cuteness test and that’s what really matters.
It’s a Zebra!
I’m a horse person, so I’m already in love with this little guy! Those eyes are irresistible!
This baby Zebrush is navy blue with black stripes. Like the swanlings, his body is translucent. He has a light pink mane and tail and glittering silver wings.
It’s true. The speckles on the egg are a clue to who’s hiding inside. Yellow spots equal the Savannah family, light pink spots are for the Garden family, red is for Farm, and so on…
Our Zebrush is part of the Savannah family.
Ooo! It’s a puppy!
Whoops! I mean, puppit. And isn’t she cute! These Hatchimals are growing on me?
This puppit is bright yellow with pink wings. She is holding up one paw, and her tongue sticks out ever so slightly.
We found a limited edition Hatchimal! A Kangaroose!
This Kangaroose has a fuzzy, lime green body and a pink feathered belly. Her wings are turquoise, and she is holding a magenta mask over her eyes.
These Hatchimal eggs are tough! Rubbing the heart until the shell softens is really the only way to open them.
However, once you’ve cracked the heart section, you can use a tool (like a flat tipped screwdriver) to chip away the rest of the shell (and keep your fingernails intact?).
Now let’s see who’s inside egg number four!
It’s a Quokkoo
Figuring out which real-life animals these CollEGGtibles are inspired by is pretty easy. The Zebrush is a winged Zebra, the Puppit is a winged puppy, and the Kangaroose is a winged Kangaroo.
This Quokkoo, though, had me stumped. Is she a bear? Koala? Gopher? Luckily, a quick internet search solved the mystery!
Our Quokkoo is based on an animal called a Quokka. Quokkas are short marsupials from Australia. They’re basically small Kangaroos.
It’s a little Gorillabee!
The Collector’s Guide shows two different Gorillabees in this series–a salmon colored one and a magenta one. We found the salmon Gorillabee.
Okay, enough fooling around. Let’s find out which CollEGGtible is in this egg.
It’s a Starlight Bearakeet!
Our Bearakeet is cherry red with silver wings. She has a pink and blue feathered tail, blue feathers on her belly, and is holding a starfish-shaped umbrella.
It’s a Seaspoon!
Seaspoons are part of the Ocean family. This small fry is bright yellow. She has glittery pink wings, a pink fin on top of her head (at least I think it’s a fin), and a curled tail.
Yay! We got another horse-related Hatchimal–a Donkemu!
This pink Donkemu is from the Farm family. She is bright pink with a blue belly and silver wings. Her hooves, muzzle, mane, and tail are also pink, but they are lighter than the rest of her body.
I love this little Donkemu! Her tiny smile and sleepy eyes ooze sweetness!
A Cheetree!
This time we found a common Cheetree from the Savannah family.
She is light pink with red spots and silver wings. Her head is tilted to one side, and she is licking her right paw.
A Spidipper?
Okay, not my first choice, but I’ll roll with it. This Spidipper is from the Boomin’ Bluffs family.
She has a sparkly, strawberry pink body, eight pink legs, and a pair of wings on the side of her head.
It looks like everyone from the Boomin’ Buffs family has a musical instrument. The Owling is playing a flute, the Duckie is holding maracas, and our Spidipper has a drum.
Final Thoughts:
Sister was right. Hatchimal CollEGGtibles are a ton of fun!
I didn’t think I’d like made-up animals like Owlicorns and Pengualas; however, these whimsical creatures won me over.
The packs are reasonably priced, and there are a variety of Hatchimals to collect. Hopefully, this means doubles aren’t a major issue (like with the Cabbage Patch blind packs).
Not only that, the fun doesn’t stop after opening the eggs. There are interactive playsets with exclusive CollEGGtibles so you can build your own version of Hatchtopia (complete with a nursery for your newly hatched critters?)!

So, I would say Hatchimal CollEGGtibles are good blind packs. They average about $3 an egg and are downright adorable.
The only complaint I have is with the picture of the exclusive swanlings, but that’s a minor detail. Even though the picture isn’t exact, the swanlings are cute and well made and that’s the important part.
Now, before we go, let’s see if these Season 4 CollEGGtibles actually glow!
How Bright Do They Shine?
Most of the Season 4 playsets come with light-up effects that you can set your CollEGGtibles on and watch them glow. Since I don’t have that, I made my own “light” out of foam board, tape, and a tealight.
It’s not as fancy as the real thing but it should get the job done.
Here are the CollEGGtibles sitting over the tealight.
I have to say, they definitely glow! These pictures were taken in a well-lit room. Now let’s turn the lights off and see what happens.
Check that out! I don’t think there’s any questioning whether these mini Hatchimals glow in the dark.
The advertising on the package often exaggerates how well gimmicks like this work, but that’s not the case here. These CollEGGtibles really do shine bright!
